Camp Blessing: Volunteering for Special Needs Children

I served as a cabin hand at a camp for special needs children. During the summers of 2023 and 2024, I lived and worked as a cabin hand and then camp buddy at Camp Blessing, a residential summer camp for children and young adults with special needs (physical/developmental/intellectual disabilities).

For the week, I was paired one-on-one with a camper, sharing a cabin, helping them with daily routines, and ensuring they had a safe, joyful experience. My responsibilities included helping with dressing, showering, meals, and offering care with dignity and respect. Together, we explored art, games, sports, and moments of quiet connection, many of which were new experiences for them. It was emotionally and physically demanding but also meaningful. Living alongside my camper at Camp Blessing taught me what it truly means to serve: to show up with patience, to listen deeply, and to offer my presence even in silence.
